Poland: a Transitional Analysis
Poland's modern history, including the first few years of the transition begun in 1989, was the main focus of Richard J. Hunter, Jr. and Leo V. Ryan's (1998) From Autarchy to Market: Polish Economics and Politics, 1945-1995. Professor Hunter and Brother Ryan provided some conclusions regarding the early reforms and also raised three fundamental questions: How can a nation build a capitalist system where there is neither capital nor capitalists; Is there a role for post-communists in the new system; and What would the system do about workers and those affected negatively by the transition? In this volume, the authors follow up their 1998 work with an exploration of what has happened to Poland and its Economic Transformation Program almost 15 years after the transition. In this project, Professor Hunter and Brother Ryan are joined by Professor Robert Shapiro to evaluate the impact of foreign direct investment and international trade on the development of Poland's post-communist market system, to assess the evolution of the Polish taxation system, and to appraise Poland's readiness for accession into the EU.
