| Dr. Piotr S. Wandycz, President of the Polish Institute of Arts & Sciences of America and Professor Emeritus of History at Yale University received several high honors in Poland this past September in recognition of his lifetime scholarly contributions. The Catholic University of Lublin (Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski) awarded him a doctorate Honoris causa on September 30 in a ceremony presided over by the new Rector, Rev. Stanislaw Wilk. The “Laudation” was delivered by the eminent Polish historian, Prof. Jerzy Kloczowski. The day before at the opening ceremony of the 17 th General Meeting of Polish Historians in Krakow, Dr. Wandycz was presented a “Festschrift” on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Later in the evening President Majchrowski of the city of Krakow presented him with a medal of Krakow and an album of Nowosielski's paintings together with a citation. In Warsaw, at a ceremony held in the Potocki Palace, Dr. Wandycz received the The Aleksander Gieysztor Prize of the periodical Przeglad Wschodni. Prof. Jan Malicki, head of the Eastern European program at Warsaw University presided at the ceremony while Dr. Adolf Juzwenko, director of the Ossolineum Library in Wroclaw read the “Laudation”. While in Europe Dr. Wandycz also participated in conferences in Germany and France. At the Leipzig University he delivered the “Oskar Halecki Annual Public Lecture” entitled “The Great Powers and East Central Europe 1878-1991” and then took part in an international conference on “Central Archives and Policy toward History in the ‘New Europe'.” In Paris he gave the opening address at a conference held at Sorbonne. His topic was “Poland in the European System from the 18 th to the 21 st Centuries”
During all of the above meetings and activities, Dr. Wandycz stressed the Polish Institute's continued interest in international scholarly cooperation. |
