Published to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the passing of one of the greatest Polish poets of the modern era, Evening on the Hudson constitutes the most comprehensive anthology of Jan Lechoń's work in English. A generous sampling of his American verse is provided in facing-page format, with the original Polish versions accompanied by English verse translations, many of them printed here for the first time. These are followed by selections from his New York journal, and the full text of the essay "American Transformations," both of which startle the contemporary reader with their continuing resonance in the America of the twenty-first century. Jan Lechoń was one of the most distinguished members of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America. He regularly published articles in the Institute's Bulletin (the precursor of The Polish Review). Many of these articles, on both literary and political themes, are brought together to round out the present volume. Judiciously edited, introduced and annotated by Beata Dorosz of the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Badań Literackich), Jan Lechoń's Evening on the Hudson is an important addition to Polish literary studies in English. |

Poland's modern history, including the first few years of the transition begun in 1989, was the main focus of Richard J. Hunter, Jr. and Leo V. Ryan's (1998) From Autarchy to Market: Polish Economics and Politics, 1945-1995. Professor Hunter and Brother Ryan provided some conclusions regarding the early reforms and also raised three fundamental questions: How can a nation build a capitalist system where there is neither capital nor capitalists; Is there a role for post-communists in the new system; and What would the system do about workers and those affected negatively by the transition? In this volume, the authors follow up their 1998 work with an exploration of what has happened to Poland and its Economic Transformation Program almost 15 years after the transition. In this project, Professor Hunter and Brother Ryan are joined by Professor Robert Shapiro to evaluate the impact of foreign direct investment and international trade on the development of Poland's post-communist market system, to assess the evolution of the Polish taxation system, and to appraise Poland's readiness for accession into the EU. |

Praise for Political Thought in Renaissance Poland: This is a collection of important yet virtually inaccessible monuments in the political history of Poland from the most dynamic era in that country's long history. English speaking students are in Harold Segel's debt for introducing them with such grace and insight into this great era in the political thought of Poland. - M. B. Biskupski, S. A. This book presents the dramatic biography of a Polish-American scientist who during the era of the Iron Curtain escaped to the West to conduct research. He hated Nazism and the Communist system in his country, for their denial of freedom and the prospect of a decent life. His early school-age memories included his struggle to survive in a Catholic convent after his father was arrested by the Gestapo and incarcerated as a political dissident against the Third Reich. Between 1945 and 1967, during the Communist regime, Prof. Wisniewski had difficulty pursuing and advancing his scientific career. He worked in prominent research institutions and achieved national and international recognition as a researcher. He published more than 700 scientific manuscripts. This volume also includes a review of his research written by his son, Thomas Wisniewski, M.D., |
